I have no experience with varients to the Model A however run rich is pretty basic. Float setting can be very critical to run rich. Hard to check on the zenith without the sight gauge, which I have and it works wonderfully for diagnosing these problems. When you mention the choke rod/mixture control being turned off and still run rich my main and cap jet antennas go up. Check the diameter of both, I did the math on the percentage of increase of jet orifice area and the increase is significant. An increase in jet diameter of .002 is an increae of 12% of area. The volume of gas flow through the jet is increased proportionally. Check the jet sizes and go with the minimum you can find. In the past I have soldered jets closed and redrilled using welding tip drills. The repro jets are notorious for being over sized. Biggest i've personally found is .042 or .007 to large. Do the math on that one.... Formula is pie are square... which I've always thought was BS. Pie are round, cornbread are square.

The Model A Fool.

: Trying to get my newly restored 30 Coupe on the road is getting to be quite a challenge..

: I am using a B carburetor with a Grose float valve, and the carb is sqeaky clean as is the fuel system evidenced by a clear filter bowl. Also using a filter attached to the top of the shutoff valve.

: Timing appears to be correct, and the timing gear cover is the B cover as evidenced by the oval shaped boss aroung the timing pin hole. The condersor is new. Now for the main question.

: The car runs very rich even with the dash control almost shut off.The idle screw is 1 3/4 turns open.Ron from Standard Auto Parts (Old Ernie Hemmings store in Peoria, IL) says that the intake manifold may not be flat causing an air leak, and suggests that the manifold be removed and planed flat.

: Would appreciate any suggestions..
