Problems with crud in my 1928 sedan full tank

I suddenly have a problem with a tremendous amount of pretty nasty looking sediment clogging the shut off valve in my '28 Model A.How in the world can the tank be cleaned and is there anything that can be done to prevent whatever this kind of scaling or build up from occurring in the future?If you have any advice, I would love to hear from you.
