I just got a 1928 AA pickup. The previous owner described it as a AA Express longbed, model AAAR.Emer brake on the left, wire wheels, umm, not sure what else to specify.Questions: 1. When it runs, the engine pops and backfires, then peeters out and dies.Plugs are black and sooty.I took the carb apart and freed up the side-mixture needle, and also removed some gunk.I'll know more once I give it a tune-up, which will be this weekend after I get down to the parts house. Does this indicate timing and tune-up?Opinions? 2. What are some recommended fluids to use in the engine? A multi-grade 10w40?Add additive like STP? 3. What are the recommended gear lubes to use in the trans, the two-speed splitter, the differential? After 68 years lots of things could have been changed so I don't know how original this is, but it has a 3-speed trans, the foot-stomp 2-speed splitter, and the worm-drive differential. 4. What is recommended for gas?Should I use a lead replacement additive? Should I add some Marvel Mystery Oil to the gas? 5. How do I get the water pump to stop leaking?Do I just squirt in some more grease and tighten that geared nut a little?Winter is approaching here and I want to get some antifreeze into it. 6. What is the recommended care and feeding for the top material? Or does anybody even drive these in the rain these days? I'm thinking of covering the top with some Visqueen or sheet plastic tarp if I decide to rain-drive it much. 7. What should I take as spare parts if I decide to try and drive this from Sacramento to Seattle over Thanksgiving.I think my mom would get a kick out of seeing me drive up in my "new" truck.I was told the truck drives at 35mph, so 850 miles each way shouldn't take too long. 8. Finally, does anybody has any contact info for Sacramento or Auburn California Model A clubs? Oops, this got long, sorry. Can you tell I'm a new model A owner? mike. e-mail of you like: mike_j2@sfov1.verifone.com |
