Painting a steering wheel?

I know the judging standards say the steering wheel shouldn't be painted
but with all the repair I've had to do, I don't have much choice.I'm
repairing a'30 wheel (I think) and I know it is supposed to be black.
Any suggestions for how to get it so that it doesn't look too different
from what it is supposed to look like?A couple of local club members
say black acrylic with a hardener.Any other ideas?Thanks.
