exhaust fumes

I have a 29 rdstr p.u. and my wife likes to ride in the back, but always complains about exhaust. I have fixed the leaks at the manifold and the manifold to muffler conection. Now i'm considering extending the tail pipe so that it ends beyond the end of the truck bed, it curently stops before the rear axel. Has anyone tried this before? I would appreciate any feedback.
