rear axel

I bought a 29 rdstr p.u. 8 months ago that i've been fixing up. I recently tried to pull the rear hubs to inspect and grease them. The threads on the left rear axel were striped and just about gone.I couldn't get that hub off, so I put it back together.I'm assuming I'll have to replace the axel, or maybe have it rethreaded to a smaller size, and find a nut that works? maybe even rethread it without pulling it? Could I be so lucky? And whats the best way to pull a rear hub? All I can find is one of those big nuts you screw on and smack! but thats probably how these threads got boogered up to begin with.
