Yes if your lucky you could use a knock-off to remove the wheel. But as you fear you will most likely mess up the axel even more.The correct tool is a wheel puller.You should be able to get one at your local auto supply store. Or you might be able to rent one.There are new rear axels available at around $200-$250.
