6 volt Alternator

My new 6 volt Alternator is still reading 8 to 10 amps charge. when i'm driving I've charged up the battery and it up still shows + 8 to 10. I also have an alternator on my other A and when I'm running it only reads +1 Amp. I'm not sure , prehaps the alternator is over charging or my amp meter is just off by 8 or so amps??
