Birds in 3rd

I'll be toolin' along in 2nd gear (in my 29 Fordor), shift into 3rd, and the engine starts chirping. I don't hear this chirping sound in any other gear, and it only seems to happen in the 25-35 mph range (ok, I'm not normally in 3rd below 25). After 35, the sound is gone, and all is well.
There doesn't *seem* to be a performance issue (then again, this is the only 'A' I've ever driven, so...)
