The cup should have at least one side of the edge with a flat spot, some have two flat spots. The theory is that the grease goes around the cup though the little space between the arm body and these spots. If everything is clean, it even works! Your wear was probably caused by dirt, grit and never being greased! Rutted roads didn't help either!
