Need a little horn advice

I've been taking apart a 1930 Sparton horn and trying to clean it up a bit. But what about the diaphragm? I cleaned a lot of rust off of it and I feel like I should paint the bare metal; but will a coat of paint on the diaphragm adversely effect the SOUND of the horn? What was the original finish of the horn diaphragm? Painted? Blue? What?
