Steering Column rebuild

There has been much disussion lately in regards to steering columns. Having recently rebuilt mine, all wrong of course, I want to ask a few questions. I bought oversized bushings and turned them and polished the shaft for .003 clearance ( I couldn't find specs anywhere) after I got it put back together, it was way too tight. I then took it apart, and back to the machine shop and had it turned to .005, this worked well. In the recent restorer I believe it called for .001 , can that be right? Mine is a seven tooth that was already fitted for grease, so that is how I left it, and I have heard it is impossible to make these oil tight, is that true? My steering column still does not perform to my satisfaction, but maybe that is impossible. does the two tooth work any better, should I consider that? Thank you for any and all advice. Parnell
