James,

Everything as you describe is correct except the cylinder should turn 180 degrees for key removal. It MAY be as simple as the lock being installed 180 degrees off in the door, or the square shaft of the cylinder twisted from force. There is a set screw in the door opening that retains the lock cylinder.loosen or remove the set screw and remove the lock cylinder assembly. You can then test both the cylinder and insert something in the door to test the rotation of the lock.Reinstalling the cylinder assemble can sometimes test one's patience attempting to align the square shaft with the hole but shouldn't be to bad.

Let us know what you find.

Regards,

Marco
