There are two approaches

One is to rotate the backing plate backwards about 16 degrees, notch it for the spring support and re-drill the holes after plugging the old ones. You also make a sheet metal cover for the notch. This is good because it keeps the plumbing high, and still permits an easy e-brake connection.

The way I'm doing it, however, is as your friend suggests to swap plates and install with the cylinder on the bottom. The problem is that the Large bore cylinder is now operating the trailing shoe (which is in front of the axle) AND the bleeder is at the bottom.

The cure is to file out the round hole in the backing plate so that the wheel cylinder can be rotated 180 degrees which puts the large cylinder on the leading shoe (which is now at the rear of the axle), and the bleeder on top.I made a cover plate out of sheet metal that fits the three wheel cylinder screws and covers the arc where the cylinder fit before it was reversed.
