Carla,
You can turn down the worm to press on a race, BUT you have to take a toolpost grinder and bore out the race, or you remove too much metal from the worm. I knew a guy who used to do this, don't know what dimensions he settled on.
And yes, you're right, the damage is from using grease in the steering, or letting it run dry.
The original tooling for the steering internal parts was still existing in 1980, but it's gone now according to a source I trusted back in the mid '80s (Ford didn't want the tooling, so the independent company destroyed it--AAAAAUGH!!!! None of these people heard of the model A hobby/marketplace!!)
