The good news is - the ends of the worm aren't hardened.The bad news is - well I guess there's no bad news. The top race can be machined without much trouble, but it'd be better to grind it for finish.We sank one almost 1/8" deeper onto the worm to correct a serious wear situation caused by a bent steering shaft. It's been in use for almost two years without signs of deterioration. We thought of pressing on an inner race, but didn't find one that looked amenable.We didn't spend a lot of time looking, though. The '56 Ford unit will work, BUT requires some machine work (the output shaft, and the steering shaft are the wrong shape, but the right orientation, and the column requires some fitting).It is an elegant solution to the steering situation, though.You can use the standard lighting switch since the shaft is hollow. |
