Fred,

The problem is that your 6 volt alternator has a voltage regulator that stops charging at a voltage of around 7 volts, when a 6 volt battery would be fully charged. However the 8 volt battery needs to be charged at 9 to 10 volts. If you can find an 8 volt regulator for your alternator you would be set. It might be possible to change your regulator to 8 volts if you know something about electronics and it is not encased in plastic. The generator, however, can be adjusted to a higher voltage.
