6V alternators and 8V batteries

I have an alternato installed on my 30 2dr and I am having a terrible time with batteries.I have lost 2 batteries since April.I have been told that I need to get back to a 6V battery but I like the starting power of the 8V system.I was told that these were compatible but I'm beginning to wonder.Should I go back to the generator?
