: : Now that I have a brand new Aermore exhaust whistle, does anyone have any advice on how to mount it?Does it fit right on the exhaust manifold, and the exhaust pipe shortened to fit? Or what?

: : RE: Rear spring shackles. Now that I have my rear wheels off and the brakes removed for replacement, is there a way to replace the rear spring shackles while in this condition? The advice in several books I have leave me sort of puzzled. I have a spring spreader to move one-half at a time.Tell me the safest way to do this, or refer me to previous questions on this (my search option doesn't seem to be working). Thanks!

: Bill,
: You should mount the Aermore exhaust whistle at the end of the tail pipe. You may need to cut off 3-4 inches of the tail pipe so that you have clearance with the rear axel.I hope that your whistle came with a valve also. The valve is really a T with two butterfly valves in it that are linked together. As the exhaust valve closes, then the whistle valve opens to divert exhasust gasses through the whistle. This is operated by a cable that can be routed under the floorboards and up a small hole at a convient location. When you stop pulling on the cable a return spring on the linkage should return the two valves to their original positions. The valve that I have is made by Fulton.I believae that the A exhaest pipe is 1 3/4 OD.If your valve doesn't fit this, then you'll need to make an adaptor to fit.
: I installed my whistle on July 1st and used it in two parades on the 4th.It is very loud and gets a lot of looks. If you have any questions or comments contact me at bschaefer@mmsd.com

: Good Luck,Bob

Hi Bill
Now is a good time to replace your rear shackles while you have the wheels off since your vehicle is laid up, anyway.Raise the side of the axle you are working on up a few inches.Place the spreader in the curl of the spring by the shackle. MAKE SURE IT IS SECURELY IN PLACE AS YOU BEGIN TO TIGHTEN IT.The spring will begin to straighten out on the side you are working as you tighten the spreader. After you get the spring spread far enough, lower the axle on that side and at some point the tension will come off the shackle and you can drive it out, hopefully. If they have been greased they should come out with little trouble. You may have to experiment as to how much you spread the spring in order to get the shackle out. Just BE CAREFUL.There`s a lot of energy stored in that spring.I would use jack stands or blocks to rest the axle on. With any luck, the bushings should drive out if you have to replace them.Mine were so solid in the holes on the springs and spring perches, I had to drill them out.Sometimes cutting them with a hack saw will allow you to collapse them with a punch and then drive them out.It may be helpful to have a helper while doing the work.
Good luck and again, be careful.
Craig
