First be sure the spark lever is as far up as it will go (retard) before removing the distributor body.Then set the the distributor cam so that the points will break with even the slightest rotation forward.When this is correct the rotor contact will aligned at the tail end almost ready to leave the contact in the body.If you were to pull the lever down (advance the timing), when the points break the rotor will be aligned with contact at the front end.

The special width of the rotor contact is to permit alignment of the rotor with the body contact throughout the timing range.The timing however, is always set with lever retarded.
