Matthew,
You already have a good idea of what you want from a Model "A".
1. Model "A"s are very reliable when properly maintained as is the case with any automobile. They are fun to drive and can be taken on most roads without any problems. Short haul or even long haul. Properly restored original brakes will do a good job in stopping the car but it is always good to leave yourself some additional space between you and the car in front. They will do a bit more shaking and rattling than modern cars but that is 70 year old technology.
2. I would suggest eith a Tudor or Fordor for your needs. What are the ages of the children and what is the size of the dog?
A friend has a roadster and went on a long trip and his daughter spent almost the entire trip in the rumble seat.
3. There are some routine maintennce items such as lube changes, grease ever 500 miles, periodic brake adjustments but these all all part of the fun of owning a Model "A".
4. Modern upgrades are fairly easy and there a great supply of both old parts and reproduction parts available. Seat belts can be added and the V8 Ford hydraulic brakes can be adapted to the Model "A'.
5. I would suggest that you contact a local chapter of MAFCA or region of MARC. Both have web pages. Talk with some of the members and they would probably offer you many more suggestions in addition to knowing where you might find your car. I would highly suggest joining one or both national clubs and a local club.
Next five?
Happy hunting,
Dave
