: : It seems the closer I get to cranking up my "A" after overhauling both the engine, transmission, and anything else that I saw move, the farther away I find myself from ignition!

: hi, gordon,

: if you got a hot nasty spark on the terminal, and the unit didn't turn even slightly, then is there a chance that the terminal itself is grounded to the case, or the bit of heavy wire that's soldered to the terminal might have been bent a bit, so that it's touching the case????---or a through-bolt?

: might not be it, but that's a place to start (no pun intended)

Hi, Carla!

I thought about that last night while I was in the shower (all good thoughts occur under such cleansing situations).

What do you think if I pull out the armature (to eliminate any grounding of the brushes themselves) and perform a continuity test betwen the starter terminal and either of the ground brushes. This should give me continuity, I think, if the field coils are operative. Then, if I do a continuity test between the terminal and the starter case, I should have no continuity if the terminal wire is not shorted out.

If there is a short at the terminal, can the terminal be removed by simply unsoldering the contact inside the case, or does the field coil require removal, as well?

What do you think? Is my understanding of the starter's circuitry (i.e., terminal to field coils to brush ends)on target, or have I missed something (again)?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Regards,

Gordon
