if you got a hot nasty spark on the terminal, and the unit didn't turn even slightly, then is there a chance that the terminal itself is grounded to the case, or the bit of heavy wire that's soldered to the terminal might have been bent a bit, so that it's touching the case????---or a through-bolt?
might not be it, but that's a place to start (no pun intended)
