G'Day Dean,
The "A" doesn't have a hub seal as we know it on the front axle shaft. The machined portion you're talking about is to accept a steel, cup shaped dust seal (part # A-1190) whose outer diameter is a little smaller than the inside of the hub. Any excess grease which escapes past this dust seal is prevented from reaching the brake linings by the grease baffle (part # A-2060-A). It sounds as though these dust seals are missing from your axle.

: I receieved this email yesterday and i"m unable to answer it, can any of you help?

: I recently purchased a 29 A 2 door coupe and am in process of checking out the underside and the wheels.
:
: I am replacing the front wheel bearings and races and noticed a machined area behind the inter bearing on the axle shaft where it looks like something would go there similar to my Allis Chalmers tractor where they use a felt washer about 1/8" thick for dust control.
:
: Can you verify this, does something fit behind the bearings.

: My book doesn't go into any great detail with prints of assembly like newer car books do.Are better assembly books available and where would I look.
