Jim,

Because the spark lever in not suspose to be used to correct a poorly timed car. Modern cars (pre computers) have a mechanical advance that changes the timing based on engine speed. With the Model A the driver does the adjustments. Let's say that your car is too far advanced. When you try to start it you can not retard the timing enough so it either does not start or breaks your arm or the starter. If it is too far retarded you can start the car by advancing the lever but once it is started it will be too retarded to run properly.
