My experience is the opposite of Bob's although I don't remember encountering a car with the timing to far advanced.To far retarded will definitely raise the temperature a bit.With retarded timing and lean carb mixture you can see an exaust manifold glow bright red at night, and what a sight it is!!!In the daylight it can go unnoticed.You know it can't be good for the block, valves or manifolds.

Also, be sure to always adjust the points before the timing since increasing the point gap advances the timing and reducing the gap retards the timing.Also measure the gap on all four lobes as many distributors with new parts won't run concentric and require that you average the gap(I use .020").
