The head is back on, I pulled it off as sugested and inverted the head, cleaned the mess out and soaked it for a couple hours with the penetrating oil.
I was pleased with what I saw lokking at the topside of the valves & pistons and pulling the sidepan: fairly clean except for a bit of carbon in all 4 chambers and wet carbon at #4.
