G'Day Frank,
Have you tried checking the valve timing on your friends car?. Sounds like it might be the cause of your problem. If you're not sure how to check it just pull #1 spark plug then whilst looking down the plug hole, turn the engine in the direction of rotation until the valves are rocking or in other words the exhaust valve is just about to close & the inlet is starting to open. The piston should now be exactly at T.D.C. & if it's not the valve timing is out. Also check the distributor shaft for wear as this would give you a similar problem to point bounce or flutter & cause the same sort of running characteristics. Another often overlooked cause is a poor ground connection between the frame & the motor so your ignition system has to try & ground itself through the spark & gas links, fuel line or whatever else is attached between the motor & frame/body. It's not a big job to turn the universal joint housing as there's only 8 bolts involved to completely remove the rear section, (just take the weight off the rear axle first) but I'd make sure that the grease port in the inner cup lines up with the nipple when you reassemble.
