Ed,
Check to see if the bowl mates the top section properly.
Take the carb off for ease.
Seperate the bowl and top section, remove the gasket, reassemble and inspect at how well the surfaces mate. If you see gaps especially between the screws this is the problem.
In most cases the top section can be straightened using a small rubber/plastic head hammer, Sears sells them, and gently tapping while supporting the work on a piece of hard wood. when close to being straight follow up by dressing with a flat file.
This distortion is caused by over tightening the bowl screws so be careful when you're putting it back together.
