I have been running an unmodified Model A starter motor on 12-volts for many years without any motor problems. However, the Bendix unit does need some attention. Start with a brand new Bendix spring. Also, use the Model B Bendix unit instead of the Model A unit. The Model B unit has.375" diameter bolts whereas, the Model A unit only has .312" diameter bolts. In my experience, the bolts in the Model A unit fail too often from the higher torque. The benefits of 12-volts are outstanding, especially brighter lights. Moreover, 12-volt parts are readily available over the counter, an advantage for touring. |
