Sprayed Metal as Body Repair Technique

A fellow at a local machine shop has a machine that he claims will spray metal and that he says is better for repairing sheet metal than cutting and welding in a new piece. The process works by vaporizing wire of whatever metal you want to spray and propelling the molten metal at the target with compressed air. He says the process can build up surfaces and fill in holes to almost whatever thickness you want. Has anyone ever heard of such a process? If so, does it work? Is it any good?Thanks.
