Rear End

I'm in the process of rebuilding the rearend of my 31 coupe.
1 axel and axel carrier need to be replaced.How important is it that the axel carrier and associated spider gears or other parts are matched pairs?They all look the same.For some reason, the axel went to far out and chewed up the carrier and the back side of the axel.I guess the bearings that look good have gone bad.
