Hi Alex..

I have a '31 Tudor Sedan, and although it's been some time since I restored it and put the door handles on, I can remember that getting them in was tricky!

I'm assuming you have original, stainless-clad original handles and not reproductions (cuz I don't know how close to original those are).

If you've already figured out that you have to push in the door lock in the jam to get the square hole in the lock mechanism to line up with the holes in the door, you should be able to just push the handles thru from the outside directly into the hole.Make sure the escutcheon plate (did I spell that right) with the two holes in it is right-side-up (to fit the curve of the belt molding).

Once in the hole, install the two screws to hold the handle in place. If the handle doesn't stay parallel to the ground, I'd expect a broken spring in the lock assembly, which can be removed from the door via the screws behind the door panel and the screws on the jamb side of the door. The good news is that there are replacement springs available - check with your local parts vendor (the Model A Ford Club of America (MAFCA) web site has a list - see below).

I hope this clears up the mystery. Let me know how you make out.
