Kevin,

First of all, most if not all of the additives highly recommend that you put your engine through a break in period (give the rings a chance to seat, etc) before adding anything, so keep that in mind.

Very likely a large percentage of engine wear occures when an engine if first started, before oil gets to all of the moving parts.

I'm convinced the use of an additive is a good idea, to save the engine in the rare case a pump or seal/gasket fails. If you do decide to use one, I have had tremendous luck with Slick 50.When I was a kid, I decided to change oil on our 16hp B&S garden tractor (to which we had added slick 50 about a year earlier).Drained the oil, put in about 1/2 a quart, dropped in the dip stick, looked full, took off for home (about 2 miles cros country from my dad's shop - 90 degree summer day).Checked when I got home and no oil showed on the dip stick (learned that the small filler tubes tend to trap oil), so I'm still convinced that the 50 saved that engine (went lots of years with no problems). Also had an '87 Subaru that my wife drove that something drained about 2 quarts of all real quick from (sticking oil filter releaf valve??) and she drove it over 30 miles home on 2 quarts before I heard the lifters.Never had any permanant damage to that engine either.

My dad uses it in his semi's and gets about .5MPG increase (significant when your talking about 6-7MPG) and I've noticed an improvment in MPG in all cars I've used it in.

Anyway, sorry to be so long winded.Hope this helps.

Gary

: Hello everyone,

: I'm picking up my short block in the morning and I need some advice.I have read that nearly all engine wear occures when the engine first starts.I want to give my engine the best protection I can.Can anyone recommend an engine additive to counteract this problem.I have had a couple of suggestions such as Risolone, Duralube, Slick 50, Prolong...I'm quite aware of pouring the oil down the distributor shaft for initial startup but I'm looking for something reliable and time tested that treats the metal. Any testimony or advice would be greatly appreciated. Have a great memorial day folks.I'm sure there will be alot of "A's" in those perades.

: Thanks in advance,

: Kevin Daly
