Well -

Find T.D.C. on number one cylinder - make sure it's on the compression stroke.

As you're turning the engine forward, note which way the rotor rotates.

position the motor at T.D.C., retard the spark all the way, and loosen the screw in the distributer cam. THEN -

Rotate the cam in the reverse direction (of it's normal rotation) until the points JUST close, and the rotor contact is pointed toward the #1 plug terminal (The long straight side of the body).

Make a mark on the pulley and the timing cover (I use a piece of coat hanger wire to make a pointer).Turn on the ignition, and position the coil wire so it's close to the block. The turn the motor forward one revolution, and see if the points JUST open (Spark jumps) when the timing mark you made just passes the pointer. If the points open early, move the cam back a bit, if they open late, move the cam forward.Go another turn forward and check again.

This should get you to a good adjustment.Make sure you locate T.D.C. with good accuracy.
