botched timing

I tried to adjust timing by the book and couldn't find a hole in the timing gear I even tried a more slinder tool with no success.After many attempts I thought I could feel a slight indent. The rotor was halfway past no. 1. I continued the process and had much difficulity in starting the car. I then removed no. 1 spark plug and gauged it until it was top dead center this time the rotor was even further off, I made what I thought was correct adjustments and in trying to start the car it sounded like I got it way out of phase.
How do it get it back in phase. I sure need help on this one.
