: A friend of mine bought a couple of hinge pin mirrors and when he went to install them, discovered that the original hinge pins were completely stuck in the hinge at the top (corroded swedge fit?).In frustration, he ended up drilling the things out, but the job was a little sloppy because the drill bit didn't run especially true. What amazed me was that even though he had drilled out the swedged part at the top of the pin, the pin still didn't want to come out -- and he is not shy with a larger hammer. So, is there a tried and true method of removing the pins?I have some rust along the bottom of my doors that I really need to work on, and would prefer the doors off the car to weld in some patches.

jim--i haven't done this myself but i've seen it done---you could make up a hinge-pin puller---visualise two pieces 2"approx long of 1" square steel with 25/64" holes through --in alignment 1/2" approx from the ends to allow for through-bolts which would clamp the 2 pieces together, over the hinge.

the upper piece would be drilled on centre with a suitable clearance hole for the head of the hinge-pin.

the lower piece would be drilled approx halfway through with a 1/4" drill and a 1/4" dowel pin ( the upper end of which had been ground down a little for clearance in the hinge-pin bore) driven into the 1/4" hole.

assembly and use is obvious, but you'd want to be certain that the lower end of the hinge-pin hadn't been riveted over and that the 1/4" dowel is positioned centrally on the hinge-pin before applying pressure. a brass or copper washer drilled for clearance of the hinge-pin head might be prudently used to protect the upper surface of the hinge itself.

hope this helps------carla
