Generator regulator

I am considering using a voltage regulator in place of the generator cutout.This is the electronic unit that is retrofitted inside the cutout and is available from some of the suppliers.If it is reliable, it seems like it would eventually pay for itself with prolonged battery life.Could someone who has used one of these things share their experiences? Thanks.
