Brad,
I believe the early Model "A" jacks were a carry over from the Model "T". The are commonly know as flip tops as the portion on top flips down and will lower the height of the jack by about two inches. If this is the style you have I can give you the markings from mine. Also, do you have a handle for your jack as this provide some clues.
