: More help!I think that I have decided that the jack is either a Model T jack or one of the very early A jacks.I would like to clean it up and look for markings. What type of cleaner can you use? Just like dish soap or something? Also, where would be markings be?Thanks again.

hi brad---if the jack you found has nice original paint under
a bit of grime, and you wish to preserve the paint, you might
try a bit of stoddard solvent on a soft cloth or cotton ball,
rubbed very gently. dish detergent and hot water will remove
the grime, but will destroy any remaining gloss on the paint.

after removing the grime, apply a thin coat of light oil to
the paint to preserve it. any light oil will do, but i myself
prefer "break-free" a high quality gun oil, available from
brownells or other small-arms supply firms.

hope this helps
