First, My compliments to Joe for remembering to mention this little detail! For those unfamiliar, a large cotter (3/16" x 1") is installed in the lower drain hole of the flywheel housing. It remains somewhat loose so that it moves around and keeps the hole clear. Without the cotter the hole may become plugged and allow for the accumulation of oil that would destroy the clutch.

The cotter was originally installed from inside the housing. From the bottom of the car you would see the legs of the cotter that were typically spread approximately 60-70 degrees. If you happen to forget installation of the cotter (if you're in this hobby long enough you will!), it can be installed after by carefully squeezing the head of the cotter in a vise just enough to allow it through the hole with a light persuasion from a small hammer. When spreading the cotter the head will enlarge slightly, preventing the possibility of it working it's way out.
