Tires

I am considering the purchase of a set of 4.75 - 19 blackwall Universal brand tires ($66 each) to replace the balding set of Sears tires currently on my Coupe. This car is often driven out-of-state and cruises at 55mph (there's a B in the bonnet!). Does anybody care to give me some opinions about Universal tires?
For the record, the Sears tires went 20,000 - 22,000 miles. However, the sidewalls exhibited cosmetically ugly hair line cracks long before 20,000 miles.
Some folks I have talked to think Firestone tires wear faster than other brands. I know that the Firestone tires are too wide to fit into stock fender wells and standard size tire covers.
I have not been able to get any opinions about the new Goodyear tires other than they are $95 each. Are there any other recommendations?
