Dan,
my gauge IS leaking on the instrument panel. Found it out when I filled up all the way. It's a slow, but steady leak. What sort of special tools will I need?

. If this is the case you will need to replace the gaskets. There is a special set of tools for taking the guage apart. Most of the parts dealers carry them.
