frank, i too have heard conflicting opinions about the desirability or otherwise of inter-leaf friction.

a lot of the old timers would assemble the leaves with oil.
and spray on a little more oil from time to time, for which
purpose the marvel oil co. sold the "marvel oil rifle"

for my own use i would first glass-blast the leaves and inspect them carefully, looking especially for cracks starting
at the centre-bolt hole, and recesses or wear areas where
the leaf tips bear on the leaf below, which i would fair out
to allow the leaf tips to slide smoothly.

a light coat of paint, then i would assemble them with a mixture of light grease and fine graphite, applied thinly

then i would have a set of spring-covers made by a leather-
worker, and lace them tightly over the springs, so as to keep
the springs as clean as might be, that is, to minimise the
entry of road dirt between the leaves.
