Bob,
I have used a copper gasket spray made by permatex and have had good results.....no leaks. You can find this a some automotive parts stores. I bought my last can at Pep Boys Automive. As far as the water streaks go you can use the brush on engine paint like Snyder's sells and it will look great if you take your time.
