: I'm struggling to remove the field coil screws-three are loose -fourth's a bugger-but a friend warns me I'll have even more trouble trying to get the field coils back in place. Is this true? What's the secret to drawing them back up in place?

: Second Question:There was a reference recently on this board, about wheel straightening.I believe it referred to a recent article in The Restorer Magazine. Can't find that reference. Can anyone help?

: Thanks again

Hi Neil:
Re: Restorer, Vol 3, page 44 for "Rebuilding Starter", and page 46 for removal of starter screws in drill press using wood jig with side chocks; same similar wood jig can also work to apply pressure to screw in woodworker's vice with 1x4 between vice jaw and top of torque wrench, or use auto hydraulic jack pressure under your wife's car.As last resort, drill hole in center of screw and remove starter screw with "Easy Out", purchased at local auto supply store or hardware store, or "nail-in" an allen wrecch in a drilled tight hole in center of screw. "Sears" 1/2" socket, drag link screw, page 52, 1998-1999 catalog, can be cut with hacksaw and ground to fit starter screw. This drag link socket screw can be placed on torque wrench. Purchase new screws and install with same pressure when removed. Putting them back in place is just a matter of centering screw, tightening a little at a time, and final torque to 30 ft. lbs. under pressure. If insulation on coils is rotted, many hardware stores still have cloth electrical tape.Tape roll is too large to pass through opening in center of coil; hence, unroll reasonable amount of tape on 3/8" wood dowel and re-wrap to patch or re-tape starter coil.
Re: "Wheel Straightening", Vol 2, page 22, & Balance Tip, Vol. 2 page 67.
Best wishes, Henry
