Testing generator parts

Is there a way to test the generator field coils and armature
before assembly?Where should there be continuity between the armature windings at the commutator?
I've got several armatures in various states & I don't want to burn up the generator with a bad one. I'd also like to know that the field coil is installed correctly & not shorted out to ground or wired in backwards.
