Does anyone know a method for removing the shaft without removing the engine?

Ken

I would try the first part of Jim Shild's removal methodology without modification. The only thing you have to be sure of is to be able to get or find the remainder of the pin when it falls to the bottom of the flywheel housing.

The second part (getting the shaft out) is a different animal completely since you don't want to work from the inside.I have used various pipe components to good effect as shaft pullers.I think you can use two short pieces of 1" standard weight pipe threaded at one end and a coupling.

Key to removal is making sure the sum total length of the three pipe components when threaded together is the length from outer pedal retaining pin to the bellhousing. You may even want to drill the outermost end of the pipe to fit the pin, but it is tough to drill *exactly* through the centerline of the pipe and match the holes in the pedal shaft. It may be better here to let the end of the pipe bear against the side of the pin.

You'll want to lubricate the pipe threads well and assemble and tighten them together in a vise first. Then you put the three pieces as a unit over the shaft and put the outermost pedal retaining pin in place for the pipe to bear against. Then use two pipe wrenches and unscrew the pipe components at the two threaded joints.

You also may want to substitute a springpin or some hardened bolt or piece of steel for the original pedal retaining pin which is quite soft.If you use a springpin, wear safety goggles in case the pin decides to shear off and the flying piece is aimed for your eyes.Safety goggles are a general all around good idea in any case.

I imagine you can probably get up to 1" of removal using pipe threads in this manner.Additional rings of pipe can be added as shims to allow further removal.Once the shaft is started, it should wind out fairly easily.

Let us know how you make out.Use plenty of penetrating oil.

Best regards,
Joe
