Two clutching questions

I have been examining the clutch and pressure plate from an '31 engine that I have acquired.Does anybody know if (other than bolting it on and starting it up) there is a way to test or check out a clutch pressure plate and disk?Mine appears to be in reasonable shape but I feel the need to check it out.
Question 2:I have heard that you can put a clutch and pressure plate from a more recent ford on the A.This is supposedly done to reduce cost, improve performance and enhance availabilty (could get from NAPA).Does anybody have experience with this?If so do you know which ford clutch would work?
