: Should I use antifreeze in my Model A?If yes, what is the best type to use? I have a new radiator and rebuilt engine. This subject was discussed in Archive #2, but for some reason I can not access those files.

Hi Don
I agree with the comments by Bob Johnson about antifreeze.
Living in Michigan I use a mixture of water and a methanol product that is used to keep air brake lines free of ice. I got the product from a local oil supplier.I used to use permanent antifreeze but the problem with that it is if your head gasket leaks the stuff will go down into a cylinder and corrode both the cylinder and piston most severely which means taking the engine apart and honing the cylinder walls to clean the mess up.An alcohol based product will just burn up if it leaks by but as Bob says, it evaporates so, you have to make sure you have a good water/ methanol mix during cold months. In summer I just use tap water. One problem with methanol or any alcohol based product is it will burn so no smoking around the radiator. I flush the cooling system out frequently to avoid stagnate water and the forming of rust.I have had good results with both my Model A and a Model B I once owned. The main thing is if you are in a cold climate use something to prevent ice from forming.Anything is better than ending up with a cracked block.I hope this info is also of help to you.
